A Review of a recent Health Day article
On Friday, the 17th, Healthday reporter Alan Mozes reported on a story that our readers may get something out of.
Researcher Gillinder Bedi recently concluded a study where he found that smoking “cues” get stronger as time goes by.
“The main point is pretty straightforward,” said study author Gillinder Bedi. “When people are exposed to things that they associate with a drug they use, they often feel an increase in craving.”
Bedi finds that “the seductive power of smoking cues does not diminish over time for those who are trying to kick the habit”. These findings were reported in the current online issue of Biological Psychiatry.

Cue induced cravings intensify
This study basically found that as “time goes on”, smoking cues intensify the desire to smoke in individuals who have quit smoking.
“Knowing this may help people to prepare better for these kinds of experiences,” Bedi suggested, “so that they don’t relapse when they experience a jump in craving after coming into contact with people, places or things that they associate with smoking.”
Coach Quits comments. First of all we at Coach Quit applaud any and all research that puts the light of research on any part of the quit smoking problem. It goes without saying that individuals that want to quit smoking have a hard time receiving good advice on quitting.
We further want to point out that this was a test done some 5 weeks after people have quit, so can we really say this is the true long term result that smokers will expect to see in the future for their own quit smoking efforts? I think it would be wrong to assume this. The only thing that this study actually suggests is that doing it this way, gets a short term result that visual smoking cues are enhanced shortly after quitting.
There could be many reasons for this, including how the study was done. The people who quit with this study seemed to have no mental help. It was all physically quit smoking, and then there is a mental result that is strong. this is to be expected in my estimation.
